Storing Bread

I thought I would share how I store my bread since my last post was on making it.  When I make bread I am making 5 loaves at a time and I don't like them to go bad or dry out.  So, I store them in the freezer.  After my loaves are all cooled, I slice them up and put them in Ziploc bags (gallon freezer bags).  This way when I need to make an immediate piece of toast or a sandwich for someone's lunch, I can grab a loaf out of the freezer and not need to wait for it to thaw before cutting into it.  Anyway, maybe you all do this already, I just thought I'd share this handy tip!

(My fifth loaf got eaten right after it came out of the oven)

  1. I was just wondering, do you have a good, quick way of slicing your bread?

  2. No, sorry! I just do it with a nice sharp Cutco bread knife and slice away the best I can by just eye-balling it.

  3. What a grand idea! I usually put mine in the freezer whole. I have an electric knife to cut mine, and I have a regular bread knife that I use sometimes, too. Now, I will be cutting it before it goes in the freezer!
One more idea...I re-use my ziplock bags. Since bread was the only thing in them, I just get rid of any crumbs and put the bread back in the bag. Then, if I get a hole in a bag, or something, I throw it out. =)

    1. Diana, I totally re-use my bags, too. I'm glad this idea was useful to you. :)

  4. I have found that if you leave bread in the freezer for a while all the moisture sinks to the bottom, so I flip mine upside-down when I am thawing it so it distributes the moisture evenly again. Not sure if anyone else has that problem or not?
