I made deodorant!

So, here's another thing I've thought for awhile about trying, and finally got around to it.  Homemade deodorant.  I think the fact that I am almost out pushed me to do this. :)  It is so easy.  I literally took less than five minutes.  I watched a video on You Tube before making it and it was as easy as it looked.  The lady on the video said that she and her husband have been using it for 2 years and have been totally happy with it.  So why not try it out?
Here's the link if you would like to watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar0BF6hMuGE&noredirect=1

This is all I used :  1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup corn starch (or she uses arrowroot powder)
6 Tblsp. coconut oil
Put them in a bowl and start mixing!

This is what it looked like when I was done:

And then I put it in this little 1/2 cup jar.  It is better to keep in a glass jar, rather than plastic.

And there you go!  You can apply it with your fingers, or if you don't want to do that, put it in an empty deodorant container and use it like normal.

  1. You are my go-to person for preparedness (and you didn't even know it!) so I have a question for you. I read on a blog to take the Tootsie Rolls and hard candy from your kids Halloween stash, put them in an air tight container, and they will last in your food storage for a number of years. Any thoughts on this? I am thinking maybe Smarites, Laffy Taffy, suckers, and the like will last forever. My plan is to put them in an old Applesauce jar and stick them on the shelf. If you have any other ideas on what to do with Halloween candy, or tips on how to make this work, I'd LOVE your opinion! You are a ROCK STAR!

  2. Are you still happy with this a couple of months later? How does it work in terms of an antiperspirant?

  3. Yes! I have used it everyday and I love it. My skin used to get a little irritated with the store bought stuff (I usually used Lady Speed Stick, or Suave, or Dove, or whatever I had coupons for:). As for an antiperspirant, it is not one, but I have not noticed any major wet issues. I am pretty active and exercise about everyday, so besides the normal sweat, it hasn't seemed to be very different than what I was using before. And just knowing what it is that I am putting on my body makes me happy every time I use it. :)

  4. Would you recommend any other oils or just coconut oil? I'm interested in other scents but not sure what would work. Thanks for posting this. :)

    1. I have only used coconut oil. It is very good for your skin. When I just made a new batch, I added a few drops of tea tree oil into it. I would think that you dry different essential oils that you want to smell like, but I'm not an expert on them. Thanks!

    2. If you want other scents, use refined coconut oil - it has less of a coconut scent to it. There are several essential oils that can be used topically, tea tree, lavender, orange, grapefruit. If you buy them from a reputable health food store, the staff should know what you can use on your skin.

  5. I like this recipe as well but had to cut the baking soda in half because it was irritating my underarms a bit. Works really well.

  7. If you find the original a skin irritant, reduce the baking soda and switch the corn starch to arrowroot powder. Don't get frustrated. When I started using this, it took a couple weeks of being a little stinky for my body to clear out the toxins. Conventional antiperspirants clog the pores to keep you from sweating. Your body needs to get those toxins out! After that, it works great!

Add essential oils to provide scent. Neroli essential oil is wonderful. Made my husband smell my pits! He's good natured that way. My daughter refused to smell them:) Be careful on which essential oils you use as some can be irritants. Lime essential oil, if it doesn't irritate your skin, would make a great coconut lime smell. Yum! You can get organic corn starch on Amazon, - only way to be sure it's not GMO is to buy organic. Adjust the baking soda up for more odor fighting if you want. Do what you need to do! I'm not the boss of you:)

2 Tbsp coconut oil (extra virgin, unrefined works the best to keep the smell away)
    1 Tbsp baking soda
3 Tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder
    5-10 drops Neroli essential oil

  9. Does it leave a paste on your skin or does it become invisible? How does it impact your clothing?

    1. It does become invisible when I rub it in. The armpits of my white shirts look so much better than when I used store bought deodorant. They aren't yellow or gray. I haven't had any problems with my clothing at all. And I have finally convinced my husband to use it. ;)
